Serve

I'm getting some material together for a youth Sunday School class on serving. You might be able to help me if you can answer these questions.

Are you serving others? Blessing others?
How do you serve?
Why do you do things for others? What motivates you?

Jesus says "whoever wants to be first must be your slave- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Matt 20:27:28

We are serving the Lord by living and caring for my husband's 88 year old father. We are doing this to provide him comfort and the ability to live at home until the end. We are doing it because we know it is the right thing to do and it is doing unto others as we would have them do to us. It is not always easy and you have to just keep on keeping on some times but other times we find joy in doing something useful and not selfish wiht our life. : )

I serve by finding hurting people and try to encourage them to keep on going on the journey. Why? Because it sucks to hurt and that is something that Jesus understood.

One thing I thought of after I signed off (living with and caring for 88 yr old father-in-law)It is easy to grow tired of doing good for someone (espescially after 5 years) There is a verse that I remember. Look up 2 Timothy 3:13.

Sorry got the wrong address for that verse. It's Galations 6: 9
Be not weary in well doing for in due season you will reap if you faint not! : )
there is also a verse that God will not forget the good we are doing but we muct have patience because the reward may not come until much later in your life.

Thanks for the comments
Peter I like how you put that ..it sucks to hurt and Jesus understood.

Anon I really thank you for the story and the reference. You're doing a great thing, keep serving and blessing your father-in-law as if it were Jesus himself.

to answer my own questions.
I try to serve others by praying for them and I guess in other ways as the need arises. Sometimes I feel guilty for not visiting and blessing more people, I don't know if that is good or bad.
When I do serve, I do it because it feels so "natural" to do it and it feels good. By natural I think I am meaning the new creations nature, Jesus' nature in me. Because I am still very selfish.
((Thought))Do I serve as long as it is convenient to me?
I'll have to think about that.

Serving is as much a heart issue as action. When I put others before myself whether at home, work, community or church, it is a form of serving. Maintaining that attitude is contrary to my nature, but makes me aware of others around me and the needs I could be serving. Then the attitude transforms into the action.

I serve because I want to leave a legacy that is more than just winning a prize, earning money, or collecting stuff. I want my family to look at my life and say "now there was a mom who loved us and taught us to love others". To me that is more important than the other stuff. Serving others puts the focus on others and reminds me to be Christ-centered and not self-centrered!
